Ron Karnaugh, a 1992 U.S. Olympic swimmer whose father died of a heart attack during opening ceremonies in Barcelona, lit the torch to open the first World University Games ever staged in the United States. A crowd of 70,000 attended the ceremonies at Rich Stadium in Orchard Park.
