Graham Hill's son wins Hungarian Grand Prix

MOGYOROD, Hungary - Damon Hill of Britain won Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix, making him and father, Graham Hill, the first father-son Formula 1 winners. Hill covered 189.851 miles in his Williams-Renault in 1 hour, 47 minutes, 39.098 seconds. Italy's Ricardo Patrese finished second.

U.S. dominates Pan Pacific swimming events

KOBE, Japan - Jenny Thompson added two more gold medals Sunday to her cache of six in seven races and Janet Evans won her third title as the United States dominated the Pan Pacific Championships. Thompson won the 50-meter freestyle and 400 medley relay and Evans took the 800 freestyle as Americans finished the competition with 23 gold medals.

Final round of LPGA event postponed to today

NAPERVILLE, ILL., - Threats of a tornado and a torrential rain Sunday forced the suspension of the final round of the LPGA Chicago Challenge until this morning. Betsy King and Cindy Schreyer, who shared the third-round lead with 15-under-par 201 totals on the White Eagle course, were among 12 players unable to begin the round Sunday.

Winston Cup race has close finish

BROOKLYN, Mich. - Mark Martin won his second straight NASCAR Winston Cup race, capturing Sunday's Champion Spark Plug 400 at Michigan International Speedway. Martin, who averaged 144.564 mph in his Ford Thunderbird, edged Morgan Shepherd by 1.69 seconds. On Saturday, Martin led 92 of 100 laps to win the Detroit Gasket 200 Busch Grand National race.

Navratilova passes $19 million mark

MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. - Second-seeded Martina Navratilova beat top-seeded Arantxa Sanchez Vicario 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) for her 165th career singles title Sunday in the Virginia Slims of Los Angeles. Navratilova, 36, earned $75,000 to pass $19 million for her career.

Middleweight champ keeps title

BAY ST. LOUIS, Miss. - IBF middleweight champion Roy Jones Jr. stopped Thulane Malinga of South Africa at 1:57 of the fifth round in a super middleweight bout Saturday night. Jones improved to 23-0 with his 21st knockout. Oscar De La Hoya stopped Renaldo Carter at 2:10 of the sixth round in their junior lightweight bout to improve to 9-0.

Florida diver wins national title

LOS ANGELES - Patrick Jeffrey of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., rallied on his final platform dive to win his third career title Sunday in the Phillips 66 National Championships. The 1988 Olympian finished with 565.02 points.

Hampton football player dies

HAMPTON, Va. - A Hampton University football player who died after collapsing at a team meeting had passed a routine physical exam earlier in tghe week and had no apparent history of medical problems, his coach said.

Fred Siggers, 20, collapsed at about 3:05 p.m. Sunday and was pronounced dead at Hampton General Hospital.

Hospital officials refused to release details.

"This is difficult," Hampton coach Joe Taylor said. "We're a close team, which means it hurts even more. We're like a family."

Taylor said Siggers, a junior from Gary, Ind., passed a physical Wednesday.

BYU athletes graduate in summer ceremony

All-American football player Byron Rex, All-American heptathlete Anu Kaljurand, All-American diver Courtney Nelson, and All-American long jumper Shu-Hwa Wang headed the list of athletes graduating in BYU's Thursday's summer graduation ceremonies.
