J.J. Joe's 65-yard touchdown pass to Marvin Callies with 1:59 remaining Saturday night rallied the Baylor Bears from a 20-point deficit to a 42-39 victory over 25th-ranked Fresno State.

Trent Dilfer got Fresno State down to the Baylor 10 with less than a minute to play but a trick play backfired. Dilfer passed to David Dunn who passed back to Dilfer who fumbled when hit and Chris Lewis recovered. Two plays later, the first game between the two teams was over.Chuck Reedy's debut as Baylor coach began with the Bulldogs of the Western Athletic Conference scoring every time they had the ball in the first half to roll to a 33-14 lead over the Southwest Conference Bears.

But Baylor held Fresno State without a touchdown in the second half while scoring 28 points on a 4-yard run by Bradford Lewis, a 5-yard run by John Henry, a 2-yard run by Robert Strait and the Henry-to-Callies connection.

Reedy was replacing Grant Teaff, who retired after coaching at Baylor for 21 years.

Dilfer passed for a career-high 483 yards and three touchdowns on a career-best 31 completions, but the Bulldogs couldn't stop Baylor's potent ground game. Fresno State gained 621 yards to Baylor's 561.

San Diego St. 34, CS Northridge 17

At San Diego, Marshall Faulk rushed 27 times for 170 yards and three touchdowns for San Diego State, which showed some of its old bad habits before beating Cal State Northridge.

Faulk had scoring runs of 10, 1 and 9 yards and grabbed the final school career rushing record that he didn't hold. Quarterback David Lowery also had a 1-yard scoring run for San Diego State, which was a disappointing 5-5-1 last year. Lowery was knocked out with a deep bruise in his right calf early in the third quarter and didn't return.

Air Force 63, Indiana State 21

At Air Force Academy, Colo., Scott Teigen threw for two touchdowns and scored another himself, and Jake Campbell scored three touchdowns as the Air Force Academy beat Indiana State.

Teigen, a senior making his first start, was impressive in directing the wishbone attack against Division I-AA Indiana State.

The 6-foot, 175-pounder led the Air Force to a 42-14 lead before he was replaced at the beginning of the fourth quarter.
