Gen. George Washington, played by Jim Gallagher, steps onto the New Jersey side of the Delaware River Sunday during a Christmas Day re-enactment of the historic Revolutionary War crossing. Thousands of spectators gathered at Washington Crossing, Pa., for the ceremonies. This is the 10th year Gallagher has played the part of Washington. He was joined by 120 other history buffs for the re-enactment. Washington and his troops crossed the icy river during a winter storm to attack Hessian troops who fought for the British. The colonial victory was considered a turning point in the war for American independence.
