In the movie "Top Gun," one of the Navy pilots asked another sarcastically whose rear end he kissed to get into the top gun school. His reply was, "The list is long and distinguished." As I watch the continuing Olympic bid process, I wonder if that will not be the question asked if the games are awarded to Utah.

As a lifelong resident of Utah, I've never felt the need to apologize for the state or the people that live here. I've always felt the things that have made Utah appealing needed no extra promotion. If Utah can not stand on its own merits, instead of having to grovel before the modern day Olympic gods, any victory will be a hollow one for our state.
