Margaret Lund "Peg" Miller, 80, died at home Wednesday, December 21, 1994 of Acute Monocytic Leukemia.
She was born July 14, 1914 in Salt Lake City, the youngest child of Julia Almira Farnsworth Lund and Henry Cornelius Lund. After graduation from University of Utah she worked in Salt Lake County as a social worker until her marriage to Dr. James Rex Miller in New York City, January 2, 1941, after which she lived in Rochester, Minnesota until 1944, when her husband went on active duty in the U.S. Navy, in San Diego. She returned to Salt Lake City in June 1946 when her husband resumed medical practice at the Salt Lake Clinic.Peg had the major role in raising three children, later caring for her aging mother, involvement in her brothers' occasional problems and later terminal illnesses. She was active in PTA, LDS Relief Society, Junior League, active and later sustaining, served for years on the board of The Sarah Daft Home, was a member and board member of Town Club. A second career was launched in 1966. As an indirect result of a dare at the bridge table at age 50 she was hired as a social worker at University of Utah Medical Center, then in 1967 was hired by Dr. Willem J. Kolff, world renowned inventor of the Artificial Kidney. She rose to the challenge of funding for patients on dialysis and transplant and especially for the rehabilitation of their families.
Peg was a charter member of NAPHT (National Association of Patients on Hemodialysis and Transplant), served on the board of the National Kidney Foundation. She patricipated in many national and international conferences including four European meetings (Paris, Rostok, East Germany and Madrid). In 1982 she was actively involved with the Heart Team, before, during and after the pioneering first permanent Artificial Heart Transplantation in Dr. Barney Clark and has maintained a close personal relationship with his widow, Una Loy. Peg served multiple terms on The University Credit Union Board and was currently on the Executive Committee.
Survived by her husband, daughter, Judy M. French and her sons, Peter and Michael of Orinda, Calif.; son, Dr. James Rex Miller, III, M.D. (Mary) of Merrillville, Indiana; his children, Alexandra and James Rex, IV and daughter, Margaret F. Miller, of Tucson, Ariz.; and surrogate daughter, Dr. Elisabet Atkin-Thor, M.D., only sister, Judy Wassmar (Ted). She was preceded in death by brothers, Cornelius "Kurt", baby, Anthon, Philo F., and Alton F. Lund.
Graveside services at Salt Lake City Cemetery will be private for family. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held, Friday, December 30, 12 noon, at Larkin Sunset Lawn Mortuary Chapel, 2350 East 1300 South, where friends may call the hour prior to services. In lieu of flowers she invited those desiring to contribute to a special fund for special benefit of patients on dialysis and transplant: "Peg Miller Special Fund c/o Health Sciences Center, Office of Development, 50 North Medical Drive #2753, Salt Lake City, Utah 84132."
