For the first time in five years, an official from Salt Lake County has won election as an officer in the Utah Association of Counties. Salt Lake County Commissioner Brent Overson was elected secretary-treasurer of UAC during its fall convention in St. George.
"This is an opportunity for Salt Lake County to strengthen ties with sister counties, while at the same time improving our relationship with the state Legislature," Overson said.Overson, a former state senator, believes it is time for Utah's counties to enhance their image on Capitol Hill. "The governor and the Legislature make a strong case opposing federal mandates on states. Now it's our turn to make a case about state mandates on local government."
Overson becomes the first Salt Lake County official to become a UAC officer since former Commissioner Bart Barker in 1989.
"Brent Overson's background as a past member of the state Senate and deputy county assessor provides him with unique qualifications to serve as an officer," said Brent Gardner, executive director of the Utah Association of Counties.
"I think his election as secretary-treasurer strengthens our organization's statewide role representing all counties."
