Taxable retail sales and business purchases for September totaled $1.43 billion, according to the Utah Tax Commission.

Spokeswoman Janice Perry said the figure marks a 9 percent increase over last year. Retail trades sales of $815 million also were up 4.7 percent from September 1993, she said.Business investment and utility sales rose 24.3 percent from $374 million from $301 million, while taxable services declined 4.2 percent to $138 million.

Taxable sales rose 10.5 percent in Salt Lake County, 5.8 percent in Davis County and fell 2.3 percent in Utah County.
