A 16-screen movie theater is planned for construction at Layton Hills Mall next year. When combined with the existing 10-screen facility, the 26 screens will be the largest multiplex cinema in Utah.
Compass Retail Inc., the Atlanta-based operator of the mall, said it has signed a letter of intent with Cinemark U.S.A. to build the complex. It is expected to be open by fall.Layton Hills currently offers customers a total of 16 screens in two facilities, Movies 10 and Movies 6. Plans call for Movies 6 to be demolished, and then construction will begin on the 16-screen, 65,000-square-foot facility. When completed, the mall will have 26 screens, the most in the state.
A Compass spokesman said the new complex will offer moviegoers a "state-of-the-art" theater experience, including rocking chair seats with beverage holders, wall-to-wall screens, THX digital sound systems and a complete concession service.
Cinemark operates Movies 9 in Sandy, Movies 10 in Sugar House, Movies 9 in West Valley City and the Newgate 4 in Ogden.
