Utah Valley State College students with entrepreneurial interests now have more incentive to pursue ventures and start small businesses.
UVSC's School of Business has established the Small Business Development Center to provide counseling services and resources for students. The center also assists students in writing and implementing business plans, provides market information and helps students apply for loans. Administrators also encourage students to take courses in small-business management. In addition, the Stephen W. Gibson Entrepreneurial Scholarship will be awarded to full-time second-year students who are pursuing a career in entrepreneurial endeavors. Students must illustrate entrepreneurial activity through current operation of a business or past business interests.
Gibson recently moved to Provo after living in Littleton, Colo., for 21 years where he operated an oxygen supply home care business. Barclays Oxygen was recognized by Inc. Magazine as one of the 500 fastest growing, privately held companies in America.
"I believe successful entrepreneurs hold the responsibility to provide apprenticeship programs through scholarship funding," said Gibson.
"I have been impressed with the UVSC administration and its recognition of the value of entrepreneurs in Utah Valley."
Each year two recipients of the scholarship will receive half-tuition for one year totaling $1,158.
