Police cited a South Jordan man recently for impersonating a police officer after he claimed to be a deputy and helped hide alcohol at an accident scene.

The man, 21, apparently stopped to visit with one of two parties involved in a Dec. 23 accident at 3500 S. 1750 West, a police report says. He later approached the second car and identified himself as a Salt Lake County deputy sheriff. The man also allegedly allowed his acquaintance in the first car to hide alcohol from police, the report says. Police recovered two bottles of vodka and a plastic cup wrapped in a flannel shirt.

The South Jordan man told the investigating officer that he had wrongly claimed to be a Salt Lake County deputy sheriff but was a fireman instead, according to the report.

However, personnel records indicate the man previously worked for Salt Lake County as a wildlands firefighter during the summer of 1993 but not since, according to county fire officials.
