Basil H. Bertoch, 88, embarked upon his final journey Dec. 28, 1994.

He was born May 9, 1906 to Ethel H. and William J. Bertoch in Granger, Utah. He married his former wife, Nellie Priestly in 1931. He married his soulmate, Elizabeth `Betty' Fleming, in 1945. They were devoted to each other for 48 years until her death in 1993.Our Basil was a wanderer and a dreamer of marvelous dreams. He loved life and took advantage of every opportunity for adventure, discovery and fun.

When Basil broke his back as a young man, he overheard the doctor say he would probably die and definitely never walk again. He thought to himself, "That's what you think!" That phrase seemed to be his lifelong motto. He overcame harsh obstacles through courage, determination and hard work. He had great dignity and was generous and kind.

Basil is survived by a fine son, John L. Whiting and his wife, Lois; seven grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He loved and was proud of each one. He is also survived by a sister, Helen Fredricksen (Raymond); two brothers, James (Margaret) and Douglas (Lillian) Bertoch. He was an inspiration to many nieces and nephews who love him dearly. He is enjoying a happy reunion with his sweetheart, Betty, his parents and his brothers, William, Raymond and Donald, who preceded him in death.

During Basil's final year he was well cared for by Dr. John Deitlein, his staff, the staff of Sandy Regional, and the members of his church. His family would like to thank each person for their love and kindness. We all benefited from our association with Basil.

Funeral services will be Monday, January 2, 1995, 1 p.m. at Broomhead Funeral Home, 12600 South 2200 West, Riverton. A viewing will be held from 12 to 12:45.
