The Washington Redskins selected Dallas offensive coordinator Norv Turner as their new coach today.

"I am convinced Norv Turner will put the Redskins back where they belong - among the top teams in the National Football League and frequently the league's top team," owner Jack Kent Cooke said in a prepared statement.Turner succeeds Richie Petitbon, who in one season guided the Redskins to a 4-12 finish, their worst in three decades. Terms were not disclosed but Turner was reportedly given a five-year contract.

"Every assistant dreams about being a head coach. I thrilled to have the opportunity," Turner said in a prepared statement.,
