Whitney Houston was celebrated as entertainer of the year and Toni Braxton took top honors for best single and best album at the eighth annual Soul Train Music Awards.
Houston brought down the house Tuesday at the Los Angeles Shrine Auditorium by singing a duet, "Something in Common," with her husband, Bobby Brown.Her popular ballad "I Will Always Love You" received the prize for best R&B song of the year and she earned the Sammy Davis Jr. Award for the year's top entertainer.
Other winners included Janet Jackson, who collected her ninth Soul Train award - more than any other artist - for the music video "If."
Barry White was honored with the Heritage Award for career achievement, presented by retired basketball star Magic Johnson.
