Some treasured stars are disappearing from the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Hundreds of the celebrity tributes embedded in concrete are slated for temporary removal to make way for construction of the city's new subway system.Favorites such as Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley will be among them.
The first stars - Oscar winner Loretta Young and actor Buddy Rogers - were uprooted Wednesday and packed in cushioned crates.
They'll be gone until late 1997, after the construction of two Red Line stations on Hollywood Boulevard.
Some of the other 450 stars to be placed in storage include Bob Hope, Groucho Marx, Vivien Leigh, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Ingrid Bergman, Charles Chaplin, Walt Disney, Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Bing Crosby and Judy Garland.
The stars weigh about 150 pounds apiece. Crews will cart away about 10 a night. The 450 being removed constitute about a third of the stars on the walk.
