The American Academy of Arts and Letters announced that 12 new members have been chosen to fill vacancies in its membership of 250 prominent artists, architects, writers and composers.

This year's electees include four artists - Nathan Oliveira, Raul Resika, Robert Ryman and Kenneth Snelson. One architect has been chosen, James Ingo Freed. Writers Shelby Foote, Josephine Jacobsen, David Mamet and Robert Stone are also new members. The field of music is represented by composers Karel Husa, Steve Reich and Robert Starer.The new members will be inducted in May.
