Former U.S. amateur champion Justin Leonard of Texas tied the 72-hole record at 17-under-par and won the individual medal at the NCAA men's golf championship Saturday.

It wasn't good enough, however, to keep Stanford from winning its first team title in 41 years with a late charge.Leonard, who will turn professional on Monday when he tries to qualify for the U.S. Open at Woodmont Country Club in Rocksville, Md., shot a final round 3-under-par 69 over the 7,000-yard Stonebridge Country Club course for his first NCAA title with a 271 total.

Texas was within one shot of Stanford with nine holes to play, but the Cardinal won the team title by four shots over the Longhorns with a record-tying 23-under-par 1,129. The under-par figure tied Arizona's winning total in 1,992.
