Anne D. Mather and Louise B. Weldon have turned their first children's book of stories into three more spinoffs.
Hazelden, a major publisher of self-help books for recovering addicts, chose the women's first book, "The Cat at the Door and Other Stories to Live By: Affirmations for Children," to launch a children's line in 1991 aimed at prevention instead of recovery. In 1993, Mather and Weldon wrote a teacher's workbook, "Around the Year With the Cat at the Door: Affirmation Activities for Ages Five and Older" (Hazelden, $14.95).Now a companion journal, "Cat Tales: A Place for Me to Write My Thoughts" (Hazelden, $9.95), has been published. The 183 one-page stories in "The Cat at the Door" offer a glimpse into the complexities of adult life, with topics like "Dad Might Lose His Job" and "An Angry Day."
