Johnny Benson scored his second NASCAR Busch Grand National victory Saturday in a controversial finish to the Sundrop 400 at Hickory Motor Speedway.
Benson, driving a Chevrolet, inherited the lead 12 laps from the finish when leader Chad Little crashed after tangling with the lapped car of Kevin Lepage. Little had led for 165 laps prior to the incident on lap 288."That was really tough luck for Chad," said Benson, the series point leader. "We had a second-place car today, because Chad clearly had the best car. But we'll take a win most any way we can get one."
Lepage, a lap down at the time, was attempting to pass Little and regain his lost lap when the two made contact entering turn three on the tight, .363-mile track. Little spun and crashed backwards into the outside wall, crippling his Ford.
"My feelings about Kevin Lepage right now can't be printed," said Little, who was seeking his third win of 1995.
"I was trying to get under Chad, and I got into some loose stuff and slid up into him," Lepage said.
Benson beat Hermie Sadler by 1.13 seconds and collected $16,805. Mike McLaughlin finished third, Jason Keller fourth and Bobby Dotter fifth. The top five finishers drove Chevrolets.
