Pope John Paul II receives a gift of Slovakian earth in a traditional ceremony at the Bratislava airport on Friday. The pope kicked off his four-day visit to Slovakia by urging its largely Roman Catholic population to apply Christian principles to the transition from communism. The eastern third of the former Czechoslovakia has suffered high unemployment since it gained independence two and a half years ago.
