Robb Wetta passed for three touchdowns, two of them to Justin Young, to lead Idaho State to a 48-14 victory over Southern Utah Saturday night.
The victory over SUU (1-3) was the fourth straight at home for the Bengals dating back to last season.Alfredo Anderson put ISU (3-0) on the scoreboard with 5:27 left in the first quarter on an 83-yard gallop.
ISU struck again with 12:12 remaining in the half, with Wetta's 6-yard pass to Young culminating a 70-yard drive. Three minutes later, the Bengals' James Ferrell kicked his first field goal of the year, a 45-yarder that gave ISU a 17-0 lead.
SUU finally scored on a 40-yard field goal by Jason Haslam, but ISU built a 20-3 lead just before the halftime clock expired on Ferrell's second boot, a 25-yarder.
The Bengals padded their lead with a pair of quick TDs early in the third period. ISU's Raven Battle returned an interception 20 yards, and four minutes later Wetta hit Elliott Giles on a 15-yard strike for a 34-3 lead.
Haslam kicked a 51-yard field goal for SUU late in the third period, and then closed the gap to 34-14 with a 2-yard run by David McCovy in the fourth period.
But Wetta hit Young on a 3-yard TD bullet with three minutes remaining, and on SUU's next play, Jarmaine Johns' interception return accounted for the final margin.
Southern Utah travels to San Marcos, Texas, next Saturday to play Southwest Texas State at 7 p.m. The T-Birds' next home game is Oct. 7 against Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, which lost a 53-43 shootout to Weber State Saturday.
