HONDA CLASSIC: A northwest wind that made the TPC at Eagle Trace play tougher and reduced the number of low scores Friday didn't seem to faze rookie Tim Herron in the second round of the Honda Classic at Coral Springs, Fla.
Herron, who tied a course record with an opening-round 62, turned in another outstanding round with a 4-under-par 68 for a two-day total of 130.
His six-stroke lead over Olin Browne is the largest in a PGA event since Jose Maria Olazabal led by nine at the halfway point of the World Series of Golf in 1990.
Browne also shot a 68 and was alone in second at 136, one stroke ahead of Michael Bradley, New Zealand's Michael Campbell and Mark McCumber.

ABN AMRO INDOOR: Second-seeded Goran Ivanisevic served 18 aces in a 7-5, 6-2 quarterfinal victory Friday over Martin Damm of the Czech Republic in the ABN AMRO indoor tennis tournament in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
But the Croatian's powerful performance was overshadowed by the withdrawal of top seed Pete Sampras earlier in the day after spriaining his right foot in a second-round match Thursday.
STICH OUT: German tennis star Michael Stich will be out from eight to 10 weeks after an operation to remove bone splinters from his left ankle.
EVERT CUP: Amy Frazier was the only upset victim as the $550,000 Evert Cup women's tennis tournament began Friday in Indian Wells, Calif.
Frazier, seeded 11th and the highest-ranked player in action on the first day of the nine-day event in conjunction with the Newsweek Champions Cup men's tournament, lost to Shi-Ting Wang of Taipei 6-0, 6-2.
Top-seeded Steffi Graf, who received a first-round bye, will play a second-round match today against Kristina Triska of Sweden, who advanced by beating Ludmila Richterova of the Czech Republic 6-4, 6-3 Friday.
TEMPLETON CLASSIC: SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Sandom Stolle of Australia beat Stefan Edberg 7-5, 6-3 Friday in the Franklin Templeton Tennis Classic in Scottsdale, Ariz., reaching the semifinals for the first time since 1992 in an ATP Tour event.
In other matches, No. 6 seed Marcelo Rios of Chile upset No. 3 seed Alberto Costa of Spain 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 and Alberto Berasategui of Spain defeated Richey Reneberg of Minneapolis 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-2).

CLEVELAND APPROVES DEAL: After intense debate Friday night, the city council approved an amended version of the proposed NFL deal that could bring pro football back to the city by 1999.
Council president Jay Westbrook said council members, who had been reviewing the proposal for a week, made several changes to the agreement to make it a better deal for the city.
That may cause problems with the NFL. Commissioner Paul Tagliabue had told the city that NFL owners could reject a revised plan. The city had to approve the deal in time for league owners to be briefed before a meeting scheduled for Monday in Chicago.
BENGALS RETAIN MCDONALD: Linebacker Ricardo McDonald, who started every game last season for the Cincinnati Bengals, agreed to a two-year contract Friday.
McDonald, 26, became an unrestricted free agent after last season. Terms weren't disclosed.
SIMS STAYS IN MIAMI: A day after the Miami Dolphins lost their third free-agent, they signed guard Keith Sims to a five-year contract.
Sims, a three time Pro Bowl player, had reportedly been seeking $2.8 million per year from Indianapolis or Cincinnati.
BILLS SIGN SPIELMAN: Linebacker Chris Spielman, a fan favorite and four-time Pro Bowl selection during his eight seasons with the Detroit Lions, is moving to the Buffalo Bills.
Spielman, 30, an unrestricted free agent, came to terms late Thursday on a four-year, $8-million contract with Buffalo. He is expected to sign later this month.
To replace Spielman, the Lions on Thursday signed another unrestricted free-agent linebacker, Michael Brooks, formerly of the New York Giants.
Brooks signed a two-year, $3.6-million contract that included a $1 million signing bonus, Booth Newspapers said.
The Lions also signed offensive tackle Ray Roberts to a two-year, $3.3 million contract that will pay him $1.05 million in 1996 and 1997 and includes a $1.2 million bonus, Booth reported.
CARDINALS TAB DEVLIN: Free-agent offensive lineman Mike Devlin, who played the last three seasons with the Buffalo Bills, agreed to a one-year contract Friday with the Arizona Cardinals. Financial terms were not disclosed.
RAIDERS SIGN LYNCH: Free agent safety Lorenzo Lynch - released because the Arizona Cardinals had salary cap problems - was signed Friday by the Oakland Raiders. Terms of the contract were not announced.
