Amy Carter walked down a path covered with pine straw with her parents at a family estate and was married in a simple ceremony beneath an arbor of wild vines.

Amy Carter, the 28-year-old daughter of former president Jimmy Carter, married James Wentzel, 27."We are all happy. The bride and groom are now husband and wife," the former president said Sunday after the 15-minute private ceremony attended by about 140 friends and family members.

The couple were married at the Pond House, a secluded home surrounded by tall pines and oaks where Carter's mother, Lillian, used to fish.

Amy Carter and Wentzel met last summer while she was working in an Atlanta bookstore managed by Wentzel, now a computer consultant at the University of New Orleans. Amy Carter, who is keeping her maiden name, is working on a master's degree in art history at Tulane University.

Wentzel is the son of Jim and Judy Wentzel of Herndon, Va. His father, a retired Mobil Oil Co. executive, met the Carters for the first time Saturday night.

"I gained a son," Jimmy Carter said. "I think we had a good melding of the two families last night. We had a toast. Amy's brothers told what Amy meant to them."

The bride, who was previously engaged to a schoolmate at Brown University in 1993, wore a 1920s-style, hand-embroidered street-length wedding dress. She wore a short veil with red flowers in her hair.
