The Cougars fell one spot to No. 15, while the Utes rose a level to No. 20 in the first AP top 25 poll of the regular season.
BYU’s minor slide can be attributed to the Cougars having tied with USC for the preseason No. 14 ranking, with the Trojans now breaking that tie by a 21-point margin.
BYU tallied 840 points from voters after routing Utah Tech 63-7 this past Saturday, while Utah earned 381 votes following its 66-14 opening victory over Idaho.
Michigan, led by former Utes head coach Kyle Whittingham, completely fell out of the rankings in the aftermath of its controversial 13-12 win over Western Michigan.
Four Big 12 teams — Texas Tech, BYU, Utah and Houston — were among the top 25, while Arizona, Colorado and Arizona State all received votes as well.
BYU will face Arizona in its Big 12 conference opener on Saturday, while Utah sets its sights on SEC foe Arkansas later that evening.
