OGDEN - Weber State University is the host school for the NCAA Division I Mountain Region Men's and Women's Cross Country championships Saturday. It is one of nine NCAA regional qualifying meets being held to determine the teams and individuals for the 1997 NCAA meet on Monday, Nov. 24 in Greenville, S.C.

Saturday's meet is being held at the Riverside Golf Course in Riverdale, Utah. The men's 10k race begins at 11 a.m., followed by the women's 5k race at noon. Spectators can see the event free.

This year's meet is made up of teams from the Big Sky Conference, Big 12 Conference, Big West Conference and the Mid-Continent Conference.

The top two men's and top two women's teams in the meet, automatically qualify for the NCAA meet in South Carolina. The top three individual runners who are not on the first- or second-placeteams also qualify for the national meet.

Women's basketball

The Utah women's basketball team will play its final warm-upgame before next week's season opener when it takes on the Spartak-Moscow team from Russia tonight at 5:15 in the Huntsman Center.

The game is being played early so as not to conflict with the Utah-BYU volleyball game at 7:30 p.m. at the Ute Crimson Court.

Two weeks ago, the Utes easily defeated the Portland Saints 74-50 in their first exhibition game. They are expected to start Alli Bills and Julie Krommenhoek at guards, Kristi Rose at center and Amy Alcorn and Angie Thill at forwards.

Utah opens the regular season next Friday at Weber State. The home opener is the following Friday against UC Irvine.

OREM - Utah Valley State College came up three points short of a school scoring record after defeating Baltimore City Community College 138-86 Thursday in the opening round of the Rotary Shootout.

The Wolverines scored 141 against Northern Nevada back in 1974. They would have eclipsed that record except for poor free-throw shooting, missing 22 of a record 66 charity-stripe visits on the night.

Seven Wolverines scored in double figures. Jordan Mulford led the way with 27. He was followed by Ben Lindquist with 18 and Darius Beard with 17.

UVSC improved to 3-0 on the year. The team plays Eastern Wyoming tonight at 7:30.
