Authorities suspect arson in a fire that destroyed the organ of a South Jordan LDS chapel Friday night.

The custodian of the church building, 2750 W. 11800 South, was notified that a smoke alarm had gone off shortly before 10:30 p.m., said South Jordan Fire Capt. Mike Farnsworth. Upon entering the building, the custodian could smell smoke, and he called 911 immediately.Fire crews found heavy smoke inside the chapel due to a blaze in the organ, Farnsworth said. The fire was put out, but it had already caused extensive smoke damage throughout the chapel.

Investigators believe the fire was intentionally started because they found holes kicked in some hallway walls, Farns-worth said. No damage estimate was available.
