FOOTBALL: Norm Chow of BYU was selected as the 1996 NCAA Division I offensive coordinator of the year by American Football Quarterly magazine. North Carolina's Carl Torbush was named Defensive Coordinator of the year.
The NAIA offensive coordinator of the year was Bart Andrus, a former BYU graduate assistant.
FOOTBALL: BYU begins spring football, with today's practice the first of 15 planned.
Coach LaVell Edwards, now in his 26th year at the Cougar helm with a 228-81-3 (.736) record, welcomes 51 returning lettermen, including 15 former starters.
The practices will conclude with the Pigskin Family Picnic at noon March 29 at noon. Tickets for the Spring game are $6 for adults and $4 for students, which include a free lunch if purchases are made by March 26. Youth 12 and under are admitted free to the Spring game, but they must pay $3 by March 26 if they want a lunch.
Among the vacated starting positions is the coveted BYU quarterback slot, where three underclassmen are competing. Paul Shoemaker, a junior, and Kevin Feterick, a sophomore, have both been with the Cougars. Junior college transfer Riley Jensen, formerly of Cottonwood High, was first team NJCAA All-America at Snow College, where he threw for over 3,400 yards and 33 touchdowns in leading Snow to a 10-1 season.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Eastern Utah and Utah Valley advanced to the Region 18 tournament semifinals in Coeur D'Alene, with CEU defeated the College of Southern Idaho 79-76 and UVSC downing Dixie College 93-87 in overtime.
Harold Arceneuax and K'Zell Wesson each scored 21 points to lead CEU, the tourney's top seed with a 27-4 overall record. The Golden Eagles meet 25-6 Ricks College Friday.
Travis Hansen scored 21 and grabbed 12 rebounds and Nathan Hallows added 18 points in UVSC, while Dixie's Justin Bradshaw finished with 22 points. UVSC (24-7) meets North Idaho (25-4) in Friday's other semifinal.
In Wednesday's other quarterfinals, Ricks defeated Snow 89-82 and North Diaho downed Salt Lake 92-85.
