The Sisters of Charity Health Care System in Houston and the Incarnate Word Health System in San Antonio have announced they are consolidating and changing their name to Christus Health.

The only Utah health-care facility operated by either group is St. Joseph Villa, 451 Bishop Federal Lane in Salt Lake City, which has been owned by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word.In all, the group has operated 15 hospitals, seven acute-care long-term facilities and four long-term facilities.

Besides admiring a new logo on the letterhead, the change won't mean much locally, said Ginger Moulton, director of development at St. Joseph Villa. The Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word have operated the villa since its 1947 founding, and that will continue.

"Same sponsorship, same administrator. No change," she said. "People won't see any difference. Just a new logo, and we'll be part of a stronger system.

"I think people would notice more in Texas, where they have lots of facilities."

With the consolidation completed early next year, it will be a $3.4 billion organization, the groups announced Monday.

The Sisters of Charity Health Care System in Houston has been St. Joseph Villa's parent company. The system also has hospitals and health facilities in Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Ireland.

Christus Health will have approximately 6,000 acute care hospital beds, making it one of the ten largest Catholic health systems in the United States and one of the top 20 hospital systems nationally. Christus Health will employ more than 23,000 people.
