DIRECTOR JEWISON TABBED FOR SPECIAL OSCAR AWARD
Norman Jewison won't have to wait in suspense as the Academy Awards ceremony draws near: He will be honored for his decades of moviemaking.
Jewison, who produced movies including "Fiddler on the Roof," "A Soldier's Story" and "Moonstruck," will receive the Irving G. Thalberg Award on Oscar night, March 21.
Jewison, 72, was hailed by Robert Rehme, president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, as a "superior craftsman through four decades of moviemaking." His films have won more than 10 Academy Awards, including a best picture award for 1967's "In the Heat of the Night," which he directed.
EX-SEN. SIMON GOES HOME AFTER HIS BYPASS SURGERY
Former Sen. Paul Simon, D-Ill., was released from the hospital over the weekend after bypass surgery. Doctors at St. John's Hospital said they expect Simon to recover fully from surgery that corrected blockages in six arteries. Simon will begin light cardiac rehabilitation soon and will return for a routine checkup in six weeks, said Dr. Harry Wellons Jr.
MANDEL'S TOO BUSY FOR LIFE AT MALIBU BEACH HOUSE
Comedian and talk show host Howie Mandel is working too hard to hit the beach.
So Mandel and his wife, Terry, are putting their four-bedroom Malibu retreat up for sale. The price comes in at just under $4 million.
"They're selling because he works 14 hours a day, and he has been on the beach eight nights in two years," listing agent Jay Rubenstein told the Los Angeles Times on Sunday.
Not to worry -- the Mandels and their three children have another home closer to Los Angeles.
BLOWFISH BASS PLAYER IS HOOKED AND GETS HITCHED
Another Blowfish has gotten hooked.
Dean Felber, bass player for Hootie and the Blowfish, married Laurie Hutchinson on Saturday in Charleston, S.C., becoming the third member of the band to tie the knot.
Darius Rucker, the band's lead singer and its last unmarried member, joined guitarist Mark Bryan and drummer Jim Sonefeld to serenade the newlyweds.
Felber and his wife, an editor at Waterfront Publishing Inc. in Charleston, planned to honeymoon in Hawaii before returning to Charleston.
