NEW YORK (AP) -- He was a legendary ad executive who came up with the '70s "Schoolhouse Rock" educational cartoons and worked for humanitarian causes all his life. She was an arts patron who helped the underprivileged.

On Sunday, David McCall and his wife, Penny, along with two other people, died in a car accident in Albania, where they were trying to help refugees fleeing Kosovo. The McCalls, from New York City, were remembered Monday by friends and colleagues as helping to build Refugees International into a leading disaster relief organization.

McCall, 71, and his 57-year-old wife were killed when their car plunged into a ravine on the road to Kukes, a main refugee reception center in northeast Albania, the Washington-based organization said.

Also killed was Refugees International's European representative, Yvette Pierpaoli of Serviers, France, and the car's Albanian driver.

President Clinton said the McCalls, "by reaching out to help the Kosovar refugees and war-affected people throughout the world, . . . stood for the best of the American spirit" and said he and his wife were "saddened" to learn of their deaths.
