M'S NOT WORRIED ABOUT RAIN: Even at $517.6 million, major league baseball's most expensive stadium isn't perfect.
On Friday night, when the retractable roof on Safeco Field was closed because it was raining, Seattle Mariners and San Diego Padres complained the roof wasn't water proof.Water dripped into right field and near second base on the dirt part of the infield.
Officials said two of the three panels that make up the 11,000-ton roof weren't aligned right by a computer.
"The roof does not leak," Rebecca Hale, the Mariners' director of public information, said Saturday. "It's not a major thing. We're still adjusting.
"The second and third panels were not overlapped as they should be last night. We had a little water coming in, but it wasn't a leak."
Hale said fans on the first level of the three-tier stadium near the Mariners' dugout on the first base side got rained on, too.
CUBS' KARCHNER GOES ON DL: Chicago Cubs made four roster moves before the team's Saturday afternoon game with the Minnesota Twins.
Relief pitcher Matt Karchner was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right groin strain he suffered Friday.
Also, backup catcher Sandy Martinez cleared waivers and was sent outright to Triple-A Iowa.
Pitchers Kyle Farnsworth and Steve Rain were both recalled to fill the roster.
Before Saturday's game, Cubs manager Jim Riggleman said both Farnsworth and Rain would be used out of the bullpen, though Farnsworth could start if called upon.
The Cubs previously disabled Karchner from April 26 to June 24 with a right groin strain. Karchner also had to leave the July 9 game against the White Sox after he felt a pop in the same side of his groin.
Karchner was 1-0 with a 2.50 ERA in 16 games for the Cubs.
Farnsworth returns to the Cubs after being optioned to Triple-A Iowa on July 4. With Chicago, Farnsworth started 11 games, going 2-3 with a 7.38 ERA. While at Iowa, he made one start and pitched 8 1-3 innings without getting a decision.
SALMON ACTIVATED: Tim Salmon was activated from the 15-day disabled list on Saturday after being sidelined since may with a sprained left wrist.
To make room for Salmon on the 25-man roster, the Angels designated infielder Tim Unroe for assignment, general manager Bill Bavasi said.
Salmon, 30, injured his wrist while trying to catch a fly ball against the Chicago White Sox. In his only rehabilitation assignment, at single-A Lake Elsinore, Calif., he went 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs.
In 26 games this season, Salmon is hitting .347 (33-for-95) with seven doubles, seven home runs and 25 RBIs.
