DESERET NEWS: The House of Delegates of the Utah Education Association Saturday called for a two-day school recess Monday and Tuesday and asked for either a special session of the Legislature or a shorter school term next year.
The resolution, passed by the membership by a vote of 231-7, also called for a mass meeting of all teachers Tuesday to determine a further course of action . . .The meeting was called aftrer Gov. George D. Clyde turned down a request by (a study committee) that a special session be called and that a $6 million emergency appropriation be made for school needs.
May 18, 1964: Utah's State School Board Monday termed the two-day teacher walkout a "clear breach of contract."
May 19, 1964: A court order was issued Tuesday prohibiting officials of the Utah Education Association from encouraging continuation of Utah's teacher walkout.
Children arriving for classes Monday were advised to take play equipment from open rooms and closets. Then they were to " go to your room and STAY there. You will be told what to do." The teacher strike, one of the first in the nation, pitted Utah teachers against government and community leders, but they felt it was the only way to protest school funding that was -- and remains -- below national averages.
