SANDY -- Police have arrested a man who claims to have started an arson fire at an LDS Church building in Sandy Monday night.
The man, 18, fled from police in a stolen vehicle early Wednesday when police attempted to stop him for driving with his headlights off near 9800 South and 700 East, Sandy Police Sgt. Michelle Fenley said. After a five-block pursuit, the man lost control of the car on the slick roads and crashed into a tree.During questioning, the man told police he had started the fires at the church, 1198 E. Turquoise Drive (10020 South) on Monday. He said he started the fire because he was upset with his parents, who were trying to force him to attend church, she said.
The man was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of arson, burglary, theft, fleeing a police officer, reckless driving, possession of stolen credit cards and traffic violations.
