UTAH STATE 31, IDAHO 14
RECORD: 3-4, 2-0 in Big West Conference
OFFENSE: Finally, the Aggies put it all together on offense, rolling up 569 yards, the eighth most in school history, and 439 passing yards, the third best total in school history. Jose Fuentes passed for a career-best 421 yards and no interceptions and even caught a touchdown pass. Aaron Jones caught eight passes for 233 yards and a touchdown. Emmett White rushed for 128 yards and 262 all-purpose yards. GRADE: A-.
DEFENSE: With the offensive breakout, the USU defense got overshadowed a bit. Even though they gave up 406 yards, they still pretty much shut down the Vandals' high-powered offense. John Welsh, ranked ninth in the nation in passing, completed 27 of 45 passes but for only 251 yards, less than 10 yards per completion. Willie Alderson, the leading rusher in the league, gained 155 yards, but 80 came on one run late in the first quarter. Blake Eagal led the Ags with 11 tackles, while Brent Passey had eight tackles, including a sack. Freshman lineman Jorge Tapia had his best game with six tackles, including three for a loss and a sack. GRADE: B+.
SPECIAL TEAMS: Steve Mullins' punting kept the Vandals backed up all night. In the first half, his punts forced the Vandals to begin drives at the 11- and 12-yard lines and in the second half at the 9-, 12- and 11-yard lines. For the game, Mullins averaged 44.1 yards per punt, even though his first two punts went just 25 and 26 yards. Brad Bohn became Utah State's all-time leading scorer with a field goal and four extra points and now has 252 points for his career. GRADE: B.
