SYDNEY — The U.S. men's wheelchair basketball team suffered its first loss in five games at the 2000 Sydney Paralympics, with the Americans falling to undefeated Canada 58-45 at the SuperDome Monday night.

With the win, Canada (5-0) won Group A in preliminary-round action, with the United States (4-1) finishing second.

The U.S. squad, which includes Salt Lake City guard and four-time Paralympian Mike Schlappi, still advanced to the quarterfinals, where it will face Australia (2-2) Wednesday. The host Aussies tied for third in the other preliminary group.

Schlappi had a steal and an assist in 14 minutes of play.

In track and field competition, Salt Lake City's Trent Blair ran a time of 11.60 in the men's T13 100-meter final but did not medal. He will compete in other sprint events in the category for his visibility impairment.

In wheelchair archery, Ogden's Sid Williams was eliminated by Japan's Koi Minami 151-131. "The course was good," Williams said. "I just didn't have my 'A' game. I have some work to do and equipment changes before team competition begins."

Through Monday's events, the United States had collected 42 total medals — 13 gold, 16 silver and 13 bronze. The U.S. total was fifth among the national standings, with host Australia leading with 58 medals.
