Lloyd "Gus" Shields left his earthly home on February 16, 2000 with his loving family by his side. He lived to fulfill his desire to see the year 2000.

He attended elementary school in Arcadia, Utah, Tooele Jr. High and Tooele High School, where he participated in the school band, orchestra, opera and played football for Sterling Harris. Gus attended BYU on a scholarship, where he played football for Ott Romney and was captain of the football team in his senior year. The team record was 8-1 which was the best winning percentage of any BYU team until the Lavelle Edwards era. He was named all conference in his sophmore and senior years. He graduated from BYU in 1933 and went to Dixie Jr. College to coach. He started the football program at Dixie Jr. College and Dixie High School. Ill health forced him to retire from coaching. He was a counselor in three bishoprics, a teacher in YMMIA, Stake Sunday School Superintendent, Stake Sports Activity counselor, Stake Orchestra and home teacher. He was a high priest. Gus loved his family, BYU, his church, music, people and all sports. He will always be remembered for his sense of humor and especially for his role as patriarch of his family. His doors were open to his children, grandchildren and great-grand-children and great-great-grandchildren, many of whom lived with him at various times. This same family lovingly took care of him at home during the last weeks of his life so that "Grandpa Gus" could enjoy his home and family. His example will live on in his posterity.
