GRIZZLIES HIRE DALY: Chuck Daly, a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame, joined the Vancouver Grizzlies' management team, along with Dick Versace and Billy Knight.Daly, a former coach with Detroit, New Jersey and Orlando, was hired as a senior adviser. Versace, a former TBS analyst and coach with the Indiana Pacers who was an assistant under Daly at Detroit, becomes the Grizzlies' president of basketball operations.
Knight, the senior vice-president of basketball operations for Indiana, was a former all-star with the Pacers and assistant coach with the team. He is the Grizzlies' general manager.

BROWNS SIGN BROWN: Defensive end Courtney Brown officially signed his six-year contract with the Cleveland Browns.
Brown, the Penn State All-American taken by the Browns with the No. 1 overall pick in April's NFL draft, will make an estimated $45 million over the next six seasons. He agreed to terms on the deal before draft day. Brown's contract reportedly included a $10.9 million signing bonus.
MORRIS INDICTED: A federal grand jury indicted former Kansas City Chiefs running back Bam Morris and two associates on drug and money laundering charges.
JOHNSTON TO RETIRE: Dallas Cowboys fullback Daryl Johnston said in a television interview that he expects to retire this year.

ITALIAN OPEN: Top-seeded Andre Agassi won easily to advance to the third round of the Italian Open, while No. 2 Yevgeny Kafelnikov was soundly beaten.
Agassi defeated Gaston Gaudio 6-1, 6-4. Other winners included No. 3 Magnus Norman, No. 4 Gustavo Kuerten, No. 7 Thomas Enqvist; No. 9 Lleyton Hewitt, No. 10 Alex Corretja and No. 15 Dominik Hrbaty.
GERMAN OPEN: Anna Kournikova made a dramatic exit at the $1.08 million German Open, losing 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 to Gala Leon Garcia after writhing in pain with an injured ankle on the next-to-last point of the match.
Kournikova, who will undergo further examination on the ankle, dropped out of the doubles. Also beaten were second-seeded Nathalie Tauziat, Amelie Mauresmo and Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario.

THOMPSON OUT FOR YEAR: Texas Rangers' left-hander Justin Thompson will have surgery Friday to repair a torn rotator cuff and will miss the entire season.

NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS: Loyola College will look to erase the memory of last year's postseason performance when the NCAA Division I men's lacrosse championship begins this weekend with four first-round games. The Greyhounds entered last year's NCAA tournament undefeated and ranked No. 1 in the nation. Their hopes of a first national title ended with a loss to Syracuse in their opening game.
