OMAHA, Neb. (AP) -- Lloyd Grimm, a U.S. marshal paralyzed in 1973 during civil disorder on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, died Monday. He was 83.

In 1973 Grimm volunteered to go to Wounded Knee after American Indian activists had taken over the town during a 71-day confrontation.On the night of March 16, 1973, Grimm and other marshals were making inspections when someone opened fire on them. Grimm was struck by a bullet that left him paralyzed. No suspects were ever found.
