- Our devoted wife and loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on November 7, 2002 from complications of surgery.
She was born May 12, 1924 in Camppoint, Illinois a daughter of Henry Steed and Mabel Perry.
She spent her childhood in Illinois and Missouri and graduated from Cahool High School in Illinois.
She worked in Springfield, Ohio at Patterson Wright Field in the plexiglass division during World War II and later came to Utah to spend time with her sister where she met and married Dale R. Porter on July 21, 1947 in the Logan Temple.
She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where she served in several organizations with special service as a cub scout leader for many years and Relief Society Secretary. She also served three missions with her husband, serving in Mississippi, Alabama, New Mexico, and Arizona.
Esther was a beautiful artist and enjoyed her art class for many years.
Her oil paintings were a treasured gift enjoyed by her children and grandchildren throughout the years.
She loved reading, visiting and laughing with friends and family.
Surviving are her husband of West Point; one daughter and four sons, Diane (Jim) Freston, Bridgeland; Randy (Judy), Robin (Jennie), Rod (Karen), all of West Point; and Kevin (Debbie), Syracuse; 25 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Carrie (Jack) Meehan of Toquerville, and Martha Ricketts of Portland, Oregon.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Ennis and Carlos Steed, one son, Todd Porter and two great-grandchildren, Olivia Ann and Morgan Lee.
Funeral services will be held Monday, November 11, 2002 at 11 a.m. at the West Point Utah Lakeside Stake Center, 4000 W. 800 No., with Bishop Mark Thayne officiating.
Friends and family may call Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist's Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road and Monday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the church. Interment, West Point Cemetery.
