NEW YORK — A former Broadway producer who once claimed to be a Rockefeller wife was sentenced to nine to 18 years in prison Friday for a long-running swindle of immigrants.
"I'll see you dead like me," Adela Holzer, 73, told prosecutor Connie Fernandez as she was led from a Manhattan courtroom in handcuffs.
Holzer, who was a producer and financial backer for such Broadway hits as "Hair," "Lenny" and "The Ritz," was convicted of grand larceny and fraud for conning 91 immigrants out of more than $200,000 with promises to help them get green cards.
Prosecutors say as many as 700 victims may have been taken for close to $1.5 million.
Holzer told her victims that she would use influential friends in Congress to pass "private immigration relief bills" making them permanent U.S. residents.
