OGDEN — Like most college football rosters in Utah, the Weber State Wildcats were loaded with local talent in 2004. The following is a review of what each player from Utah accomplished during the season.
Nick Chournos, RB, senior, Bear River: Chournos finished his last season at WSU with 1,052 yards rushing and eight touchdowns. He also caught 14 passes for 78 yards. Chournos was named to the Big Sky's second team offense. He also ended his career as the school's all-time leading rusher with more than 3,500 yards and 30 total touchdowns.
Brady Fosmark, DE, junior, Clearfield: Named the co-defensive player of the year, Fosmark had 50 solo tackles and 90 total. After recording eight sacks in 2004, he is only a half a sack from being the school's all-time leading sack leader. The NFL prospect also forced three fumbles and returned a fumble for a touchdown.
Shane Barkdull, DE, junior, Davis: Barkdull finished fourth on the team in total tackles with 65, with 32 solo. He was also selected as honorable mention Big Sky.
Mike Stroshine, LB, senior, Mountain View: Former coach Jerry Graybeal had big expectations for Stroshine coming into the season, but the projected starting linebacker suffered a season-ending knee injury in fall practice.
Jay Banner, LB, sophomore, Bonneville: Saw limited action due to back injuries.
Dallas Drecksel, SS, junior, West: Drecksel completed the season with the third-highest tackling total on the team with 77, 35 solo and 42 assisted. He had one interception and was named Big Sky honorable mention. Drecksel also returned punts for the Wildcats, fielding 19 for an average return of 9.8 yards and a long of 45 yards.
Jeff Fowler, QB, senior, Davis: Played in four games and completed 32 of 75 passes for 553 yards, three touchdowns and five interceptions. Fowler averaged 138.2 yards passing in those four games and had an efficiency rating of 104.47.
Jake Francks, OL, sophomore, Clearfield/SUU: Francks started on the offensive line all season.
Nick Greene, SS, junior, Box Elder/Dixie State: Redshirted the year.
Rich Glenn, LB, junior, Mountain View/Boise State: Saw limited action in five games and had one tackle.
David Hale, OL, freshman, Fremont: Started on the Wildcat offensive line all season and earned conference honorable mention honors.
Derek Johnson, DT, sophomore, Clearfield: Johnson recorded five tackles and one interception in limited action.
Joe Johnson, K, junior, Granger: Joe "the Toe" led WSU in scoring with 66 points. He was 17-for-22 on field goals and hit 15 of 16 extra points. Johnson was selected as second team All-Big Sky.
Eric Jones, LB, junior, Roy: Jones emerged as a defensive leader in 2004 and led the Wildcats in tackles with 90, including 59 solo. Recorded two pass breakups and one forced fumble. Was also named Big Sky honorable mention.
Wyatt Kennah, P, junior, Northridge: Kennah had 59 punts for an average of 41.8 yards. His longest punt was 62 yards.
Jason Lott, DE, sophomore, Morgan: Lott played in nine games and posted 22 tackles. He also had 1.5 sacks and one pass deflection.
Mike Mathis, WR, sophomore, Northridge: Before breaking his leg in October, Mathis caught 15 passes for 323 yards and one touchdown. Mathis also returned two kickoffs for 29 yards.
Chris McConnell, WR, senior, Lone Peak: McConnell finished the season as the leading receiver for the Wildcats. He hauled in 33 catches for 627 yards and two touchdowns.
Andy McFadden, LB, sophomore, Kanab: McFadden had 35 total tackles, one interception and one pass breakup.
Tim Odland, LB, sophomore, Park City: Odland recorded 31 total tackles and one fumble recovery.
Patrick O'Keefe, DE, senior, Brighton/U. of U.: O'Keefe had 1.5 sacks and 29 total tackles on the year.
Naisa Panisi, C, freshman, West: Redshirted.
Travis Shumway, LB, freshman, San Juan: Redshirted.
Ryan Wight, SS, senior, Olympus: One of the bright spots on a young defense, Wight had 63 total tackles, one pass break-up, a forced fumble and one fumble recovery.
John Eastman, QB, freshman, Hillcrest: Redshirted.
Chase Helm, TE, freshman, Hunter/Utah State: Redshirted.
Owen Koeppen, LB, freshman, Park City: Redshirted.
Wyatt Bubak, QB, freshman, Layton: Redshirted.
Gary Boden, LB, freshman, Ben Lomond: Boden played in nine games and recorded six total tackles.
