A Las Vegas casino owner's $10 million gift to the University of California, Los Angeles, got his name on a building.

UCLA Medical Plaza is now the Peter Morton Medical Building, named after the chief executive for the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Las Vegas. He also owns Morton's restaurant in West Hollywood.

Morton made the $10 million gift in November, which is paying for renovations to the outpatient building as well as to support the Mattel Children's Hospital at UCLA, his office said Monday.

Dr. Gerald S. Levey, dean of the UCLA School of Medicine, has called Morton's gift a "generous contribution" that will benefit the community for many years to come.

The Peter Morton Medical Building funds have already paid for new operating rooms, expanded radiation treatment therapy for the Oncology Department, the surgery and MRI center and research for breast cancer treatment for the nuclear outpatient center.

Morton made the donation after his son fell out of a tree last fall and was treated by a UCLA neurosurgeon. The youngster, who lives in Los Angeles with his parents, has fully recovered.
