Dr. Gerhard G. Kunkel 8/20/1921 ~ 5/18/2006 This earthly journey has come to an end for Dr. Gerhard Gustav Kunkel on May18, 2006 in Taylorsville, Utah. Gerhard was born on August 20, 1921 in Tilsit, East Prussia. Gerhard was educated in Germany during his youth and later in the United States. He continually strived to gain more knowledge on a daily basis because he felt it was important to strengthen the mind and he gave freely on his knowledge and talents to others when called upon. He served in the German Army and was a decorated World War II veteran. He came to the United States with his family from Germany in May of 1952 to gain a better life for his family after World War II. He married his sweetheart, Waltraud on September 25, 1943 in Willhemsburg, Germany and later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple in 1953. He was an active member of the LDS church and held many positions to serve others. His greatest love was serving as Choir Director because of the enjoyment of music in his life and served as a temple worker in the Jordan River Temple for many years. Gerhard is survived by his loving wife, Waltraud Schoenrock Kunkel; three sons, Jens (Judith), Burghard (Bernice), and Klaus (Shirley). He is preceded in death by daughter, Christa in November 2004. Together with Waltraud, they shared 13 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, May 22, 2006 at the Mountain View 1st Ward located at 6020 So. 1300 W. Family and friends may visit one hour prior to services at the church and also Sunday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the Mountain View Mortuary, 3115 E. 7800 S.
