PROVO — Six freshman football players at BYU have been suspended from practice for breaking team rules, BYU football coach Bronco Mendenhall announced Thursday night.

David Angilau, Brannon Brooks, Ryan Kessman, Ryan Love, Gary Nagy and G Pittman have been suspended from practice. The players will be permitted to return to practice pending the completion of team-imposed requirements.

It is uncertain if any will be making the trip to New Mexico this weekend. None have major roles on the football team at this stage of their careers. G Pittman, who was injured at UCLA, might be considered a third-string corner. None are on BYU's two-deep chart.

While the infraction or infractions by the freshmen have not been made public, sources close to the football team said the rules broken by the players were not considered drastic enough to warrant suspension from the team; it was more of a life-learning experience by rookie players.

A relative of one of the players, receiver Kessman, posted on an Internet chatroom (Total Blue Sports) Thursday night, that his son planned on asking BYU's athletic director for a release from his scholarship to transfer and play somewhere else.
