Merlene Draper Hermansen 1929 ~ 2011 "Our Dear Mom"
On the beautiful Spring morning of May 5, 2011, early when the birds began chirping, our sweet and devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend was called home unexpectedly, but peacefully. Born to Fenton and Gladys Harris Draper on July 29, 1929. She was 81. Mom is in a happier place with our dad and eternal companion Allen. In rejoice, Mom is also reunited with her father, mother, brothers, sisters and grandsons who have been long awaiting this reunion. Merlene grew up in the glory days of Moroni, Utah during the Great Depression Era, losing her mother at the age of six and her father at the age of 16. She married Allen J. Hermansen of Mt. Pleasant, Utah in the Manti Temple on September 9, 1947. At a very young age, our mom learned the values of hard work on the farm and pressed forward through difficult times. This blessing has been instilled in her children and grandchildren who have learned from her by example. She valued her knowledge of that hard working generation. Mom's greatest attribute was her strength and the love she showed to others. She lived her life giving unconditional love and touched the hearts of many. Her work in life was being a devoted wife, mom and caregiver. Her eyes and ears were open to the needs of others, always looking past herself. She made the world a better place by providing anonymous, compassionate service to neighborhood families, children and the elderly. She was also tender hearted to the many animals who entered her life. How grateful we are to have had her shining light in our lives. She leaves behind a legacy of love with her eight children, 25 cherished grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. Visits, get togethers and long phone conversations will be missed by all. Merlene was spirited, bright minded and wise. She never missed reading the daily newspaper or watching the evening news and could converse on nearly any topic, even sports. She was passionate about gardening and loved the beauty of summer flowers and autumn leaves. Merlene loved the Savior Jesus Christ and naturally emulated His example by the way she uplifted others and conducted her life. The Gospel knowledge of Jesus Chirst is the greatest gift and blessing that she could bestow upon her family. She blessed others with a cheerful praise and a smile. Everyone who knew our mom has a place for her in their heart. Merlene leaves behind a treasured posterity. Her children Dan (Cleonice), Brent (Leslie), David (Karen), Val (Alicia), Cindy (Jeff) Powell, Laura (Kevin) Allred, Lance (Fabi) and Dr. Layne Hermansen. Brother and sister Ralph Draper and Marjorie Holt. Merlene was preceded in death by her husband Allen, grandsons Shane and Landon Hermansen, father Fenton Draper, mother Gladys Harris Draper, brothers Burdell, Harris, Parry and Tom Draper, sisters LaRue Seely, LaDonna Barthlome and LaRetta Draper. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 11 at the 19th Ward LDS Chapel located at 225 West 500 North, SLC, Utah. Viewing from 10-11:30 a.m. Funeral at 12:00.
