PORTLAND, Maine — Republicans Charlie Summers and Bruce Poliquin and Democrats Cynthia Dill and Matthew Dunlap are locked in tight contests as they battle for their parties' nominations in the race to fill Sen. Olympia Snowe's soon-to-be-vacant seat.

Summers was leading Tuesday evening with 27 percent of the vote followed by Poliquin with 23 percent, with 40 percent of precincts reporting in unofficial returns. In the Democratic primary, Dill had 44 percent to 37 percent for Dunlap.

Also on the GOP ballot were former Rick Bennett, William Schneider, Debra Plowman and Scott D'Amboise. Other Democrats were Jon Hinck and Ben Pollard.

The Republican and Democratic nominees will face Angus King, a former two-term governor, and several other independents on the November ballot.
