SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Political newcomer Donna McAleer has won Utah's Democratic primary and will now challenge Republican incumbent Rob Bishop in U.S. Congressional District 1.

The 46-year-old McAleer (MAC-ah-leer), of Park Ciity, had faced 31-year-old Ryan Combe in Tuesday's primary.

McAleer is a West Point graduate and former Army platoon leader who nearly qualified for the 2002 Olympics as a female bobsled team driver. Combe, of South Ogden, has worked as an entrepreneur, consultant and university marketing director.

The 60-year-old Bishop of Brigham City is seeking his sixth term.

District 1 encompasses 10 counties from the northern end of the state through Kaysville, and Park City after redistricting.
