"SPIDER WOMAN'S DAUGHTER," by Anne Hillerman, Harper, $26.99, 301 pages (f)

"Spider Woman's Daughter" is a thoroughly readable, enjoyable novel.

Patterned after the popular books written by Tony Hillerman, who died in 2008, this debut novel by his daughter, Anne Hillerman, excels and in some ways, exceeds what her father was trying to do.

Set in the southwestern land of the Navajos and ancient Indian tribes, the story is unquestionably colored by the heritage Navajo Nation police officer Bernadette "Bernie" Manualito and her husband, Sgt. Jim Chee, share.

But unlike many books where the author has to try to make the blend work, this is a seamless transaction. This is an artful, careful and rewarding exercise.

Readers come to understand and respect some of the old ways and skills like the weaving of rugs and the singers who heal with their chants and rhythms.

The story takes right off, building on the characters already known to fans of the Leaphorn and Chee series.

There's a serious crime committed and harm done, and it's up to those who love Joe Leaphorn to solve the mystery.

For a while, it looks as if the lady with the car with melting Fudgsicles in the grocery bag might be somehow involved. Then it looks as if her son is hiding something. Then his friend can't be found nor Leaphorn's live-in lady friend.

Ancient and priceless pottery is key as is a potent history that initially seems insignificant.

It's fun to read and along the way, there are lessons in family and love to be learned.

Anne Hillerman tells her story with grace and without confusion.

The characters feel real and the Chee marital relationship, though positive, is real. Sometimes they bug each other.

Bernie is a little bossy and her husband recognizes that.

The details of the murder investigation lead to some unlikely conclusions that keep the reader surprised until nearly the very end.

The character who commits the crimes seems a little insane but then murder is an act of insanity, is it not?

The violence is limited to gun and Taser play. The language is clean and the characters involved mostly care for each other and their heritage.

For Tony Hillerman fans, here's a treat that's very close to the real thing. For Anne Hillerman fans, it may just be the first of many such books.
