“THE LITTLE SNOWPLOW,” by Lora Koehler, illustrated by Jake Parker, Candlewick Press, $15.99 (ages 3-7)
In Salt Lake City author Lora Koehler and Provo illustrator Jake Parker’s picture book “The Little Snowplow,” a new snowplow joins the big trucks of the Mighty Mountain Crew and they point out how much littler the snowplow is than all the others.
There’s plenty for the little snowplow to do as it clears streams in the spring, cleans up after parades in the summer, pushes leaves into piles in the fall and keeps in working order while the bigger trucks do things such as bulldoze mudslides, build roads and make mounds of salt and sand.
The big trucks, including a dump truck, a cement mixer, a garbage truck and a utility truck, don’t think the little snowplow can handle the job when the snows come.
When a blizzard comes, it’s the snowplow’s turn to shine as it clears drifts from the streets. The dump truck is called in to help, and when an avalanche buries it and knocks some boulders lose, it’s time for the snowplow’s hard work and preparation to shine.
In a story reminiscent of “The Little Engine That Could,” Koehler shares lessons about not giving up when others around you don’t believe, being ready and working hard. Parker’s pencil drawings give each of the trucks personality, especially the little, determined snowplow.
