Utah, coming off a bye week, rose five spots in both the Associated Press and Amway Coaches polls released Sunday.
The Utes (4-0, 1-0) clocked in at No. 5 in the Associated Press poll, with 1,254 points and seven first-place votes. Last week, they had 1,054 votes and one first-place vote. Ahead of Utah in the poll are No. 1 Ohio State, No. 2 TCU, No. 3 Baylor and No. 4 Michigan State.
Utah has the third-most first-place votes in the AP poll, trailing only the top-ranked Buckeyes (38) and third-ranked Bears (10).
The Utes received 1,118 votes and one first-place vote in the coaches poll, rising from No. 12 to No. 7. Ohio State remained No. 1, while TCU, Michigan State, Baylor, LSU and Clemson round out spots 2 through 6.
Utah is now the highest-ranked team from the Pac-12 after UCLA fell at home to Arizona State 38-23 Saturday. The Bruins fell 13 spots to No. 20 in the AP poll and 10 spots to 20th in the coaches poll.
According to College Poll Tracker, which tracks the top 25 ballots from AP voters each week, the seven media voters who placed Utah No. 1 on their ballots this week include Brett McMurphy (ESPN), Chadd Cripe (The Idaho Statesman), Eric Hansen (The South Bend Tribune), John Shinn (The Norman Transcript), John Adams (Knoxville News Sentinel), Jon Wilner (San Jose Mercury News) and Sam McKewon (Omaha World-Herald). Adams had Utah No. 1 on his ballot last week as well.
The Utes moved up in the polls after four teams in front of them lost, including Mississippi (38-10 to Florida), Notre Dame (24-22 to Clemson), Georgia (38-10 to Alabama) and UCLA. Utah moved ahead of each of these teams in the coaches poll and also leapfrogged Florida State, a 24-16 winner over Wake Forest. In the AP poll, the Utes also leapfrogged those four teams that lost and passed up LSU, which beat Eastern Michigan 44-22.
California, Utah's next opponent, rallied to defeat Washington State 34-28 behind four touchdown passes from Jared Goff and rose from No. 24 in the coaches poll to No. 22, while also climbing one spot to No. 23 in the AP poll. ESPN’s "College GameDay" announced it will be in Salt Lake City next weekend for the Utah-Cal game, which starts at 8 p.m. MDT Saturday on ESPN.
Five teams from the Pac-12 are in the polls, including USC coming in at No. 17 in both polls and Stanford at No. 16 in the AP poll and 18th in the coaches poll.
BYU, which had five votes in the AP poll last week, had three this week. The Cougars did not receive any votes this week in the coaches poll after receiving one the previous week.
